Our Walk4Hearing 2021 participants,  Amy and Dennis Becktell, Pamela Kreps, and Denice Roberts.
In 2020, the Walk4Hearing, sponsored by the National Hearing Loss Association of America, became virtual walks.
The western Colorado Chapter did not participate in a walk in 2020. In 2021, the spring walks were also virtual, but were associated with various cities across the United States. The Western Colorado Chapter walk team associated with the Nashville, TN walk. Amy Becktell grew up in Tennessee, and lived in Nashville for several years, so there was a connection. The virtual walk was held June 13, 2021.

The team raised $1,390, and was the team that raised the most money for the Nashville walk! In addition, Pamela Kreps was the top fund-raiser for the Nashville walk! A portion of the funds raised remain with the chapter, and will be used to support on-going activities for outreach in support of people with hearing loss in western Colorado. Below are the team’s amounts raised:

Amy Becktell: $1,050
Dennis Becktell: $320
Pamela Kreps: $1,620
Denice Roberts: $200

The virtual walk day events included a musical performance by Mandy Harvey, a deaf singer who performed on “America’s Got Talent,” and various speakers sharing information about why they participate in the walks. After the virtual event, the team members gathered for a brunch to celebrate the team’s success.
Each team member raised enough to qualify for a tee-shirt.

National Hearing Loss Association of America Virtual HLAA Conference June 24-26 2021 by Denice Roberts

This was my second conference. The first was in 2017 and I attended in person. I enjoyed the virtual HLAA Conference. I learned about the new technology. It is amazing how many people are out there trying to make everything accessible to people with hearing loss.
It did take me a while to figure out the virtual Exhibit Hall. Some vendors had demos to watch and were there to answer questions. Others didn’t have much. But I guess that is pretty much the same as attending in person. I liked the HeardThat app and Amy liked the Internet Radio For People With Hearing Loss –hearmusicagain.org. There were 8 virtual sessions, presented one at a time, over 3 days, and 2 times scheduled for Virtual Exhibit Halls.
“2021 HLAA Research Symposium Hearing Care for All: Innovations in Extending the Reach of Hearing Care. ” There were basically three reports covering cutting-edge scientific findings relevant to adult hearing loss. They were based in rural Alaska: Expanding Access To Hearing Care In The Rural Alaska Through Telemedicine, Southern Arizona, Community Health Workers And Hearing Care At The U.S. / Mexico Border, and Baltimore: HEARS Peer Educators In Action: Older Adults Serving Older Adults.

There were opportunities to ask questions on-line during and after the sessions. A lot of information presented for a very good price. Next year’s convention will be held June 22 -24, 2022 at the Tampa Marriott Water Street, Tampa, Florida. Did you attend the HLAA National Virtual Convention 2021, June 24-25? If so please come prepared to share comments during our September 11th meeting of Western Colorado Chapter HLAA.

Some Colorado chapters are still using Zoom. I have been asked to send invitations to the HLAAWCO members to the various chapter meetings.  They also invite their members to our meetings. The other chapters have started having people register for the Zoom meetings. This is a process we have started using for our meetings. It reduces the possibility of having uninvited guests at our meetings.

Other HLAA Chapters opening up their Zoom meetings to anyone interested.
You can find a schedule here: http://new.hearinglosscentralma.org/HLAAVirtualEvents.html

If you have not used Zoom, here are two captioned videos with some helpful hints to get ready for the meeting.

You can also contact Denice at 970-241-0315 x 29 and she will help you get set up. She works Monday – Thursday 9-5.
